Opening old boxes
While opening some old boxes I found a whole stack of oil painting tubes I have been putting to the side throughout my study at the academy. We used to get about 1 tube from each color at the beginning, but I really didn't like the pigment, I always liked to paint more with "Winton & Newton" oil's more then with these "Classico". But anyway, I can get a good use of them because they are small tubes for travelling and stuff...

Portrait of two brothers ("making of" and details included)
So I have been asked to do portraits of two boys and decided to paint it in more layers combining egg tempera and oil, like Van Eyck, Albrecht Durer, Hans Holbein, Otto Dix and others did. In each phase I have tried to be exact as possible. Up until these two portraits I have been painting a little less rational, but now I am trying to get myself used to this new but old technique of painting.
First I used egg tempera to get the drawing done as exact as possible in black and white, with umber background (it really dries fast and gets done in one day). Next, I set the local tones of the hair, skin and clothes with oil and covered the background in a coat of Prussian blue to get a cold feel of the white I want to use as a background at the end. After it dried I used egg tempera again to put out the highlights and bring the texture of skin, hair and clothes back (egg tempera is really good for textures and drawing parts). After that comes the "irrational" part of painting in oil where I fix stuff and try to get the character of the model right.

Autoportrait avec cigarette sur Montmartre à Paris le jour de Noël avec un foulard noué en un nœud parisien

Self portrait with cigarette on Montmartre in Paris on Christmas with a scarf tied in a parisian knot... I think it says it all. Started the painting a while ago, now its finally finished. I've tried to make the portrait a little bit naive, like Christian Schad, which was harder then it seems, because it still had to look like me. But I think I got it right at the end, along with the christmas/tourism atmosphere on Montmartre.

The Great Diplomatic Painting

The painting depicts the iniside view of The Croatian National theatre (Hrvatsko narodno kazalište) with over 500 portraits of people i know. Mostly I have been concetrating on people from The Academy of Fine Arts in Zagreb, that I have been studying on. So this is a kind of "goodbye painting" for the 5 years I have spent on this institution.
A better image of the whole painting will be available as soon as possible :)

Illusion of Hrelic
People buying...
The interesting thing about this painting is that it was overpainted the very next day it was done. The only parts that where painted over was the figure and two little bottles of rum at the bottom. So it is obvious that the old man himself did it. I had to wash his paint away and paint him again, but this time with sun glasses and a mustache so it would maybe stop him from recognizing himself and being ashamed (or whatever the reason was he overpainted it).
I painted the pillars of the underpass under which people usually walk their way to the sunday fair of Hrelic. I painted three randomly chosen people that are usually selling right by the side of the colummns. So its a kind of respect given to people selling on the fair. And at the same time a monumet given to Hrelic.
While working there I was in the company of Lonac, a fellow artist, who also did one column (he will do the second as well as I will do the fourth when we get the permission). Our paintings are actually part of a bigger iniciative by the association of "Kontraakcija", who are the founders of the project "Muzej Kvarta"which is working on different cultural activities around New Zagreb.
The paintings are painted in acrylic, and are cca 220cm x 250cm large
